A Different Kind of Year End Review

Every December, financial newsletters flood our inboxes with “the state of the economy” updates and bold predictions for the year ahead. But let’s be honest—how often do these add value?

The truth is, our financial plans don’t depend on headlines. We’ll continue saving, investing, and protecting what matters. Staying the course is the best plan.

But what if we used this time of year to reflect on something deeper than numbers or market trends? What if, instead of reviewing portfolios, we reviewed our purpose during our year end review?

Here are a few questions to consider for this year end review:

  • Are you living in alignment with your values?
  • Did your actions this year reflect the type of person, partner, parent, or friend you aspire to be?
  • Where did you thrive? Where did you drift off course?

This isn’t about perfection—because we all get off track. It’s about pausing to reflect so we can realign and move closer to a life of meaning and integrity.

For me, this past year has been about creating more space for what truly matters—being an engaged dad and a present husband and diving into creative pursuits like writing and podcasting. At the same time, I’ve struggled with spending too much energy on our finances, even when I know we’re in great shape.

As we move into a new year, I’m shifting my focus from what feels comfortable to what feels fulfilling—even if it takes me out of my comfort zone.

Change is never easy, especially when your identity feels tied to your work. But reflection can open the door to new possibilities.

The beauty of this kind of review is that you set the parameters. Only you know your purpose and values. Deep down, we all know when we’re in alignment—or when we’re a little off track.

I invite you to join me in this reflection. Let’s use this moment to reconnect with what truly matters in our lives and step into the new year with clarity and purpose.
